With the 3G version I don't believe you'll need to buy an internet service if you also have the iphone that should be available in a couple of months. From what I've read, the ipad and new iphone will use the same size sim card.

I was going to wait for the new iphone before getting the ipad. Now I may get the 3G ipad so that I can have my website uploaded for the convention.
