Something else we oldtimers remember is the lack of a number "1", and sometimes the number "0" on old manual typewriters. When you were just typing a piece of paper for a human to read, nobody cared if you used a lower case L and the letter O instead.
I was one of two boys in the typing class in high-school (1953). We had finger exercises before each class to gain strength for the manual typewriters. There was one electric typewriter in the classroom; it was high tech, and only the teacher could use it [g].
