I became very envious of the iPhone everytime I saw one. The Apple ads of the last year finally convinced me to switch to the iPhone (for which I had to pay Verizon to get out of their contract).
I can only say that that the iPhone 3GS has been the most magnificent piece of hardware (combined with software and the iTunes Store) that I have ever experienced. An absolute marvel of engineering and design.
I have individual scans of each chip in my modest collection stored on my Desktop PC (running on Windows 7). I sync that folder with my iPhone through iTunes. The result is that I have my entire chip collection in my pocket that I can view or show anyone in an instant. The touch screen and pinch and spread capability allows me to easily blow up (in amazing detail) any spot on a chip. In fact, viewing my chips in this manner, allows me to observe its condition in a way I could never do even with a magnifying glass.
I can't express enough, how fabulous this device would be for anyone who wants to carry their collection around (and this can probably be said of the Droid from Verizon as well).
I'm a techie, and I will spend money that I shouldn't on technology. So on Saturday, I got an iPad.
I can only say that the screen is unbelievable! My chips look like pieces of artwork as they take up the whole screen.
And, I do believe that the iPad will prove to be a Paradigm Shift in the use of laptops and netbooks. If you're basically surfing the Web, doing email, looking at pictures (or chips), this device is so easy to use and Web pages are so beautiful, it may be the perfect device for you.
For portability in your pocket, go with the iPhone. For the absolute amazing display, go for the iPad, but remember, right now you'll need WiFi access unless you wait for 3G models later this month.
