Scans of my black lettered chips

Mine looks about like yours does, Steve. My theory is that these were early production and they were not trying to polish the finished coin-inlays at all... not spun, and not buffed. The lateral scratch lines are what you might see on a planchet punched from a rolled sheet of stainless steel. The 4Q and DI 5's have this same appearance.

Just speculation, though. I don't think they have been modified by someone after production.

I show the other black-letter chips I've been able to find. The Desert Inn is probably the scarcest. The Coliseum may not be black lettered; just dirty. It's a brass coin as well.
