I always use one when in the US - much much cheaper when calling home from the hotel room, and still cheaper even if you stand at the payphone. I use my cell phone for texts as those are still cheap, but the roaming rates still make them expensive to use for calls.

And as Archie mentions, you get a souvenir once they have been used! I have a few now from my stays over the past few years.
