"How would a chip warp in the first place?"

Many different ways. I learned a lesson a long time ago about buying chips at flea markets in Las Vegas during summer months. It was only a 3 dollar chip, but when I took it out of the cardboard flip it was in, it was warped. Probably from sitting in the heat and sun. Now I check every chip. Especially ones I buy at flea markets.
