That according to most of what I saw on Google "DO" seems to be the accepted norm.
On the other hand, were it me, I would still use Dom. Rep..

I wonder how many would recognize "DO" vs. Dom. Rep.

Then of course there is the small island of Dominica which imho would only confuse matters worse
