I have to give Messrs. Campiglia and Wells credit..generally speaking they are usually right on the money with a majority of market values, at least for $1 chips, which I follow.
However, in my opinion, there have been a few pretty big discrepancies, as far as rarity and prices go. I am only using Ebay as an example, so obviously tradeshows and private sales don't count in my experience.
One recent example is a $1 Chip from the Four Kings Casino which was located in Las Vegas from 1977-1980. The $1 chip is listed as an R-4 with a value range of $15 - $22 - $30.
In the past 6 months I only remember seeing a single $1 Four Kings chip on Ebay, and it sold for around $100, if memory serves.
Another example I can think of off the top of my head is that Sans Souci 12 1/2 cent Chip and that Carousel $1 Chip that each have a high value of $100. I have seen MANY of these chips on Ebay for as little as $10 - $20 each in very good condition..1/5th - 1/10th of the listed high value.
I don't have a copy of The Chip Rack, so I have no idea what these chips are listed for in that publication.
Those are a just a few examples I have seen..but I would be interested if anyone else has noticed major discrepancies, on either rarity or values, on other chips?
Just some discussion on a slow Thursday..
