I went over to two "xasinos" just minutes from my house here in Mexico City. Play City and Casino Life. Basically about 250 slot machines in each casino, bar and food service. They have just added electronic Hold Em tables by Poker Pro.
Hold Em poker is very popular here in Mexico with ESPN showing the WSOP and a major soccer team sponsoring Poker Stars with tournaments for free tickets, balls and shirts as prizes.
Basically Play City Del valle (there are about five different places under this name)has two tables and you register for a players clard by making a 300 peso (about U$D23)deposit and then you insert the card into a slot on the table at your place. The bets start at 15 and 30 pesos (U$D1.20 and 2.30) for the blinds then it is no limit although the manager was telling me that because they are just starting they are offering free classes and will "not be too happy" if somebody joins a table of beginners and starts upping the bets to 40 or 50 dollars. The manager reckoned it will be about a year before they will be able to offer higher stakes games (30/60 dollars. Right now their focus is on getting people to play and feeling comfortable with the game.
Casino Life is a bit more upscale: they have the same low stakes games on two tables and another table with 100/200 peso blinds (about 8/16 dollars). This casino also requires you to sign up for a card and make deposits.
The play is purely electronic - no physical chips (imagine PokerStars but with your opponents in front of you).
I played for about an hour at Casino Life and it was fun; the people at the table had very little experience and were betting for the excitement of playing rather than for winning. Given that the alternative is illegal clubs with the very real risk of police raids, I'll probably stick to this for now. I used to play at an illegal club in the south of the city and one night my wife asked me not to go - I don't know why I listened, but I'm glad I did - the place was raided, 150 people arrested, about 200,000 U$D in chips confiscated and everybody's credit cards and cheque books.
Anyway, here's a scan of my player's card (they spelt my name wrong, but the that's par for the course down here - luckily my surname is the same as that famous singer in the States)
