John, obviously you are quite educated on the subject and I applaud your efforts. The delivery system of help, as had been created by USA and other nations, have worked quite well in the past. This is different and the same system that worked before does not apply to this disaster or to this country. I already tried to involved some in what we are doing, but my use of sarcasm and irony created a misunderstanding with the belief, very hurtful I must say, that I was putting down the USA and that I was pro Chavez. I am neither, I am an American, very proud but my roots and family originated in the Dominican Republic and for Chavez, and his clones in Brazil, Ecuador, the bottom of South America, I am being nice when I say I find them grossly despicable. I will open my mouth again, even if it cause people calling me names. As John says, the problem to the
- MEDICAL TREATMENT of these poor souls is a more difficult than getting the aid. Everybody is helping out, food and medical equipment is sitting everywhere, except in Haiti, because there is no safe space to distribute the AID. Medical help is no longer achievable within Haiti. There are no true medical establishmemnts. Early, the MD's in Haiti ALL voulenteered to help as they could get to where the worst damage was, but soon the medication was gone, the food was gone and the clinics closed with the MD' running back to their homes. Practically all the medical treatent is being done in the US Medical ship(s), Guantanamo and the Dominican Republic. Three days ago the Eastern part of the DR had been abandoned by most Dominican living there, as, close to 100,000 haitian settlers per day, sick and healthy, moved in . All the hospitals there were treating only haitians without outside help because all the aid is going to Haiti and that is the protocol. After all, there was no disaster in the DR. While this was going on, planes full of aid and medical treatment from all over the world, a few miles from the devastated empty Dominican hospitals, were turning back because of their inability to get the aid to their ONLY destination. Today, as I was negotiating permission in the Dominican airport to bring med equ. I got the latest, the treatment of Haitians in the Hospital had filled all the hopital of the country in the West and center and is already in the capital, only some ex-private hospitals are not allowing to treat the Haitians in order to treat the DR citizens as all the public Hospitals, are already filled with haitians. In a 3rd world country that barely has the budget to comply with with their duty to their countrymen (not counting the $$$$$ retained by the Dominican Govmnt.-Stealing) So, treatment for now is only in US territories and the DR.
-WHERE WILL THEY GO????? tHEY ARE ALREADY GOING!! Yes, Louisiana can hold a few thousands, New york, Miami, alaso with large Haitian communities can handle a few thousands, but, as of this mornig close to a 1,000,000 haitians had already crossed and settled in the East of the DR, slowly moving towards the Capital, now over 150,000 haitians are estimated to be crossing the border daily and increasing in a geometrical fashion, and they are not goig back!! To what?? The Dominicans have abandoned the West and moving inward and East and those with family in the US are moving away to settle in the USA thinking about the future. The answer to where the 9 million (10 millions a few weeks ago) will go is quite clear, the future of the entire island is also clear, it will be one. I am not minimizing the pain of the Haitian, just answering some questions, specially what to do with them after the country stabiizes, easy, the answer lies in the other side of the border. Interestingly, the coat of Arms of Haiti used to say "The Island (Hispaniola), one only and undivided". That will be the end of this disaster and how it will stabilize.
In the mean time, the best way to help the sick children, the largest casualty of the disaster!!, is by sending help to the DR via the Dom Red Cross. Yes, a lot will be stollen, but what is left will make a difference as to how many survive . Need plenty of hydration material and antiobiotics, and maybe try to explain to a politian that breaking a few protocols and shifting some of the help miles to the right, instead of returning home, will really increase the survival rate of the Haitians. I will be there again next weak teating the children, anybody with extra powder or oral hydration??
