Look at the sound settings for the TV. You may have the treble and base turned all the way down which will make the sound very muddy. Another problem with HDTV is that a lot of times the lips don't match the sound you hear. There is an adjustment for that also. Some TV's also have auto sound level settings which keep the sound at a constant volume.
