Just curious to hear other chippers opinions on the issue of fake chips coming into the market and our hobby. Whenever I see a rarely seen and expensive hotstamp chip, I have a bit of curiosity about the chip. The reason comes from knowing that it can be easily reproduced today and I would think very hard to be proved to be a fake. The blank (old stock) chips are out there in numbers, the stamps are out there (everywhere now), how long will it be before we are dealing with fakes in our collections? It seems to me that for some people the money is always a big temptation.
There are certain chips with particular insert colors or patterns that would be hard to get a blank of, but a lot of awesome chips are hotstamped on common color chips. I would hope a club member would not attempt this, however, I sell a lot of chips on ebay and I can tell you that most of my sales don't go to club members. There are a ton of collectors that exist outside the club. These people are getting smarter about chips and they play by their own rules. I know you can only sell so many before a flag would go up as to numbers of a particular chip coming out, but if done thoughtfully, it would be tough to detect. I collect hot stamp chips but on the expensive chips, it is a leap of faith that I have really started to question. I don't think per say that the HS chips I collect now are fake, but will hotstamp chips in general, especially those on common colors with no inserts, be open to major scrutiny in years to come? Any thoughts on the subject?
