surely when heads up and all in, you cant muck your hand. For one thing, the winner had a right to see the other players hand. Both players cards should have been on the table face up.
In this instance, if you can safely retrieve the cards without question (which obviously you can) then its up to you to always try and pay the winning hand.

In anything other than heads up all in those cards should be dead.
