Re: melting lucite on chips?
In Response To: melting lucite on chips? ()

Hey Rick!
Not sure if you remember me or not, but it was great to meet you at the convention this past summer! In my opinion - that stuff is near indestructable. The chip is probably going to be destroyed. Even if you manage to get the whole thing shaved down to within a milimeter all the way around - whatever you use to dissolve the remaining stuff clinging to the chip will probably be very bad for the chip. For some chips with incused molds and cross-hatching that stuff is going to be dug in like the Marines. A smooth faced Crest and Seal chip might not be as bad for gripping the Lucite, but I would bet that the plasticy material would probably react worse to a bath that would dissolve it. I don't think that freezing the Lucite in the freezer would be enough to make it brittle enough to smash it and shatter it. You would probably need liquid Nitrogen or something similar to do that. If that did work - I'm sure that the chip is much more fragile than Lucite and would shatter also. Good luck though! I'm very curious to see what happens. Let us know!
Peace,
Don
