You are right about the currency. It is my main concern. I looked at Media safes that are rated at 125°F for 2 hours .... BUT the safe will be in an out building (the Doghouse) which, if set ablaze would completely burn down quite rapidly (MUCH less than 2 hours) and the temperatures would never reach 1800°F for 2 hours. The fuel (wooden walls) would not sustain a high temp for a long peroid (I believe). So, I am concluding the safe would protect paper- Documents and Currency. Chips- I was concerned about distortion and color fading due to temperature.
Also, I store CDs and DVDs with all my data. These are at risk to high temps but are back-ups that could be lost without dire consequenses (would be a pain, but not devastating). Also, the disks are stored in a box with a small zip-lock bag with water laying on top of the disks. It the temp gets hot enough to melt the bag the water leaks onto the disks. These are stored on the bottom so water will not affect paper items stored above. (I have too many chips to do this with them- so I was looking at critical temps for them)
Another concern is what I store the chips and currency IN. Mylar and PVC could melt around the chips and currency (encasing the item in melted plastic). I am looking at storing valuable items loose (in wooden cigar boxes maybe).
If in the event of a fire (and I was home) I would instruct the Fire Dept to put additional water on the area where the safe is located.
