I'd have no problem with completely banning the sale of tobacco products. It will never happen because those who complain the loudest about its use are the same folks who vote for/champion the incredibly high taxes imposed on the products. No other legal consumer product in this country is as heavily taxed as tobacco is.

The biggest problem I have with smoking bans is they aren't limited to public property. Some folks think public access to private property is the same thing as public property, but it isn't. Businesses should be able to to cater to their customers when the subject is the use of a legal product that doesn't require a specific license for said use in a privately held business with public access.

Smoking bans are nothing more than government sanctioned discrimination. You can be a smoker, but you can't be a smoker here, here, or there. You must go to a segregated room, or you must go outside and the place you have to go to is 50 feet beyond the pet relief area, or you must leave the property entirely.

At the Indy airport, you literally have to leave the property to smoke. Last year, I lit up one of my little flavored cigars outside in the taxi/shuttle area. A cop pulled up on a segway and told me I had to butt it or accept a $50 ticket! I asked him where I could smoke, and his only response was I had to leave the airport property to do so. I went inside and asked someone at an info desk to tell me where I could smoke. She told me not to tell anyone she told me this, but a hotel next to the airport isn't on airport property, so I could walk down to the end of the concourse, go across the street, and use the hotel outdoor ashtrays. It isn't go to the back of the bus, it is get the hell off the bus and walk across the street - we don't want your kind around here.

Ban the sale of it completely and lose all of the obscene tax revenues. Make it criminal to use it everywhere since it already is subject to penalties in many places. If the government's job is to be a nanny, go all the way.

What's even more ironic concerning smoking and laws is the current push for pot to be legalized beyond medical use in some areas. Gotta wonder how many new "designated smoking areas" would suddenly appear if that were to happen.
