I am glad you realize that there was no great conspiracy on Ebay to rip off the seller.
Not only would that never be possible, I think anyone who believes that underestimates collectors. People who really want something would have bid, no matter what.
Once again I commend the seller for telling everyone how many he has and never hiding that fact.
Unfortunately I think he was given poor advice on what someone thought they were worth.
Having a large foreign collection, I consider myself fairly knowledgable on values and demand for chips. I collect Caribbean and Playboy chips myself and sure I would love to have some of these chips.
However when I saw the opening bid of the $500 was $250, I decided to pass. While I would gladly pay $100 for that chip, $250 is beyond what it is worth to me (And I am a collector).
I think that if the seller was to advertise these chips for $1,000 each I am sure he would sell one or two as this happy has a few collectors to which money is no object.
I also believe that if the seller offered them for $250 each he would probably sell 10-15 of them but I seriously doubt he would sell anywhere near the 31 even at that price.
For some reason there is a preception that these chips are worth a lot more than that even though they are not Vegas chips.
We already know that there are at least 31 of them. however the seller also mentioned that some chips were stolen by workers some time ago. How many of these chips truly exist? 50? 100? Maybe even the whole rack somewhere.
Value is a highly subjective subject. Something that is worth $100 to someone may only be worth $50 to someone else. How many times have you seen chips on Ebay that list for $150 sell for $50?
If the seller believes that the chips are worth more than what they brought on Ebay he has every right to not sell the rest of them. To suggest that someone would drill the lot of them and use them for skeet is even sillier than the conspiracy idea. To put them away and save for later would make a whole lot more sense.
My suggestion to the seller is decide what he wants to sell the chips for. He already knows what they will bring on Ebay. Offer the chips for sale at the prie he wants and whatever sells, sells. Whatever does not sell, he can pout away and offer at another time.
Its unfortunate that his experience here on the board was a bad one. The reality is that everyone wants a good deal on a chip and some people will push a lot harder than others. Thats not an excuse, just a reality.
Thanks for your post and happy chipping,
Doug
