I was in the middle of this whole thing for a while and I had the same thing happen to me when I found the rack of star broiler chips/winner inn chips. Honestly, I'm surprised I stayed in the hobby and actually became a member of the CCGTCC for a brief while.
I love casino chips. I love the feel of them, the sound of them as they clack in your fingers. I love rolling them across my knuckles. I love counting them and thinking about which next horshu mold will find it's way into my hands.
Yes, I overpay for most of my chips. I don't care, because I want them and quite honestly I set the price. It's what they are worth to ME. When I die, you can give them back to the earth for all I care.
But when you girls get together in your knitting circles and start calling people names and telling them they don't know anything and they should sell them to you at a cheap price....well....'f' you. And yes this did happen. And Ironically, I knw the price that you wanted to buy them, because you tried and tried to get me to talk Jeff into selling the chips to you. And I laughed at your price. Let's pretend you got the price you wanted for the lot. and let's say you 'kept it at an honest price for the collectors'. you would have turned a profit of about $7,500. Nice little sum. You should pat yourself on the back. You really are what collecting is all about.
You're right that the bahamas/playboy collectors is a small community and I can't help but believe that you all got together and shut the bidding down on these chips. Maybe I'm wrong and I bet it would be hard to do, but I find it hard to believe that there was only one bid for the $500. Normally, I would agree that ebay would be the place to set the price, but again, this wreaks of dirty pool.
And yes, I'm part of the reason he's holding the chips. I told him to wait a few years till some of you die off.
Sorry for this post to those who are just in this for the chips and the history.
