My wife and I were in town for 4 nites and I just had to visit the casino (which took all of 5 minutes). Too stuffy for me; so we walked down the hill to play at the Loews (or whatever it was called back then) and enjoyed it very much. Besides the French, there had to have been a thousand Italians in the house due to some convention in town. The next two days we hung out in the annex casino behind Cafe de Paris (same chips back then; Frf) inside the mall. Tables were open at 1 pm and the room was much more relaxed as it was at the Loews... We were invited to a small after hours club one nite (Jimmy Z's) and I remember there being only one wheel... but there was no way getting a seat. I think SBM ran that room.
