My wife's sister and her husband work for the State Dept and were stationed in El Salvador during the 1980's. We went to visit them and were really impressed with the whole country. We were out in a small town 50 miles from nowhere and I was assaulted by a local with a knife. Turned out to not be a big deal but we didn't stay in town very long. One night it was my turn to buy dinner and I fed the 7 of us lobster and drinks and tip at the best place in town for $110. Can't do that here in the states. Of course there were other downsides. Like the trip to Pizza Hut where we had to drive by the guy with the machine gun guarding the parking lot. And at night you could hear the rebel gunfire from their house. We went to a top of the line resort on the Pacific for a side trip and it was great. Only problem is that we were the ONLY people on the property. I said to myself that I would love to buy that place when the rebel problem was solved.
