I think it's an error. You can't just squeeze the center out of a Paulson metal inlay as you can with a BudJones CIC. Paulson used thin aluminum inlays that you'd have to destroy to get out. Can't say whether or not someone at the factory made it intentionally but I don't think it's an after production modification.

I'd be interested in that chip if you decide to sell or trade it.
