those Chinese inscriptions
Recently (July 5th), while I was on vacation, "Smitty" posted some Chinese c&s chips he got from "Ace" attributed as saying "Beautiful Hidden Place", San Francisco, 1931. The same chip is in Staeffler's guide (Chinese section) translated as "Remit Peach Source". Who knows what the Chinese will put on a poker chip? Anyhow, I translated it as Dong Tao Yuan, (reading from top down) I have also seen the same inscription as Tao Yuan Dong on other chips. So dong is a cave, tao is a peach and yuan is a spring (of water). Peach Cave is a popular tourist destination in Sichuan province, China, and its spring is also popular. Whether or not these chips were used in China, I have no idea.
