If all you want is to check email, Alex, dial up still works. If you have a modem in your computer connect from your hotel room by unplugging the phone and plugging the wire into your laptop. Use one of the services like Budget Dialup where you only pay for the minutes you use or buy a block of minutes if you want to do this often. Dialup is painfully slow for web surfing, but fine for email.

I've used this a few times in remote national parks where there is, by intent, no wifi and often no cell phone service. Worked at Mount Rainier and at Glacier National Parks last year.
