Ballys, Showboat, Harrahs and Caesars are all related properties with Ballys being the lower end of the 4. The rooms are ok, just not updated in a long time (they also have the Claridge Tower which is part of Ballys) I much prefer Caesars but have stayed at Ballys from time to time. Resorts may be cheaper but I am not a fan at all. If you stay at Ballys be sure to check out the "Ridge" on Saturday Night. It is a small gambling area in the Claridge Tower with a party atmosphere. Music, a gong and give a ways. If you dont mind the volume, it can be fun to play there. Music is always going there but Saturday night is the most fun. If you are looking to play poker, both Caesars and Ballys (which are next to each other and have a indoor walk through) have a poker room although Caesars is much nicer. Table stakes will be lower at Ballys.
Trump Marina, which is the lower end of the Trump Properties (Trump Plaza and Taj Mahal are the other two) may also have lower rates than some of the other hotels but it is NOT on the Boardwalk. In my opinion, Taj Mahal and Caesars are my picks for stays on the Boardwalk but can be pricier than the others. Borgata is my choice off the boardwalk but is pricey as well.
