I strongly suggest than when buying from strangers (or just about from anyone other than friends or known reputable sellers) you try as much as possible to pay using your credit card or credit card-funded PayPal payments. It gives good peace of mind that if worse comes to worse you can order a credit card charge-back.

PayPal is always changing its rules, but as of now I think you can always select your funding source if you don't have a cash balance in your PayPal account, which is why a lot of us keep two PayPal accounts, one for buying, as noted in the above paragraph. ... ... .... I don't know why it works for me, but I have a PayPal Plus Credit Card (which you can apply for from the PayPal web site), and I have successfully opted to have as a default all of my PayPal purchases funded with that credit card EVEN THOUGH I HAVE A LARGE BALANCE IN MY PAYPAL ACCT!
