I know the Globe is divided into 26 Zones A through Z and all call sign's in a zone are the same (with a few exceptions)

My question is Why is U.S. East of Missippi River "W"

and West of the Missippi River "K"

Logic (yeah Right) would seem to indicate "J" or "U"

Any answers?
