The seller of the jetons & chips said that he has had them for around 20 years and was given them by a friend who told a story of having some connection with the Kray Twins (notorious London gangsters from the 1960's) - I am taking that story with a big pinch of salt, but means there is no other detail from the original seller!
So does anyone have any clues as to the origins of The Clifford Club?
The £1 and 5/- (that's 5 shillings in pre-decimal currency, when there were 20 shillings to the pound and 12 pennies to the shilling, and also dating the chips to pre-1970) jetons are numbered, 2681 being the highest £1 I have and 2958 the highest 5/-, and so I guess there must have been at least 3,000 of each which probably means these were not produced for personal use. Maybe a UK Illegal club, but I don't know. The 2/6 (2 shillings & 6 pence) chip is the same on both sides, as are the jetons.
I would be very interested if anyone knows anything.
Thanks
Jason
