acetone. It will soften the plastic on an original chip. It does nothing to the remolded chips (at least the ones we know about). Q-tip, moisten with acetone, touch the edge to test. Most paint departments sell it in cans.

Also, an original chip will have a glossy surface and may have marks on the edges from the injection molding process.
