Nearly four centuries have passed since the pilgrims enjoyed that first harvest feast after surviving a harsh winter in the New World.
And, as with those first pilgrims, the citizens of this great nation today have a lot for which to be thankful. Most of us can count our families and friends, good health and happiness, freedom to worship, an opportunity to earn a living and the many freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution among our blessings.
In fact, for most of us, this special day will include a table full of family, friends and our favorite foods. But this special day should also give us some food for thought.
On this national day of Thanksgiving, many Americans are serving in our military, both here and abroad, serving so others may know the freedoms and the blessings that we enjoy as Americans.
Their service should stand as a reminder to all of us that today is a day to give thanks that we live in a land where freedom is the right of every person. Take a moment today to pay tribute to them for their service and sacrifice, and remember the families that they have left behind.
Let's hope our men and women in uniform will be home with their families next Thanksgiving.
As we gather around the table today, we should take the time to give thanks for the religious and political freedoms we enjoy and remember what a privilege it is to live in this land with all of its great abundance.
And we should also give thanks for the good that most of us will enjoy. Not all of our neighbors are so fortunate.
