I always remember these being mentioned in the soft cover book "Tokens and Medals" (1992) by Alpert and Elman. They say they generally were made in large quantities in the 1970's and 80's. They said that if they were real old such tokens, they would never have appeared in such large quantities, wouldn't be the style of modern tokens, and would be worth several hundred dollars each.
