Don, I have a hard time believing these early chips were not finished with some hand engraving on a soft pliable chip. Here are some roses that appear to be hand done. The only thing that is the same is the ring. I have a half dozen large Horseshoe chips and no two are alike. It's hard to believe they came from some kind of mold. I know there are some early chips with nice designs that no doubt are completely molded, but they are consistent, one chip to the next. I feel there may have been some ivory chip engravers crossing over to the composition chips until some mad, toothless elephants found them and beat the crap out of them
