My people came over from Italy that year as well.

My mother's father made it a point to learn English and speak w/o an accent. He worked in NY's garment district making men's shirts and refused to converse in Italian with the other Italians. My father's father and his brother decided to fool everyone in not thinking they were Italian... They were very good at it, too.... speaking perfect English and retiring from law enforcement after 44-years of service.
