You should be able to use the laptop software on the desktop, as long as the version of Windows on the desktop will run the software. Software licensing terms and conditions vary by manufacturer and product. I have noticed that many current software products are licensed to a single machine, requires a license key and registers itself online. And I believe that MS Office does this. If you haven't installed MS Office on the laptop you should be able to install it on the desktop. After installing it one machine, you can try to see if it will install on the machine.
