I did the wrolds longest yard sale this week....
The worlds longest yard sale goes from somewhere in central ohio to Gadsten AL - over 650 miles of continous yard sales. The original plan was to take it easy this year and since I hadn't been south of I-40 in a few years I decided to try just Chatanooga, TN to Crossville and only do it in one day. The best places are normally just north of I-40 in Crossville and the one time I went south of Chatanooga I didn't find many sales at all. I got up at 5 AM on Wednesday and drove for 2 hours to Chatanooga and headed north. By 6PM I was still 5 miles south of Crossville so I just planned on going back the next day since I was only 1 1/2 hours from home. I figure that I see 800-1000 different booths each day. Thursday is the official starting day but a lot of dealers set up as much as 3 days early. This year was the very first year that the weather was just a touch less than totally unbearable. Both mornings were very cool (I actually had to put the top up on the convertible early Wednesday it was so cold on the freeway). But Wednesday it was supposed to only get to 84 degrees so I was surprised to see it over 90 in the afternoon. Thursday it was hot also but at least there was a small but comforting breeze all day. Normally it is 95 degrees with 100% humidity and just unbearably hot. The only way to survive is to take a bottle of water along and just keep sipping on it all day. I drank well over a gallon of liquids both days. Now the question is was it worth it? In a word - not really. I only found a few tokens, dice, cards, chips and an encased penny. I got an old pair of dice from El San Juan and a mismatched pair from Aladdin. I though I had a pair from Sands but can't find them now. I got one illegal chip but it is badly damaged and one decent MOP but it also it badly chipped. I got a set of ABC bowling tokens in a velvet case from Nevada from 1993. Being cautious, when I got home I looked under the tokens and found the guys entry papers for the tournament and 2 of his slot cards. I got an older Hacienda matchbook and cards from Catfish Bend. One nice find was an octagonal ashtray from New Frontier that I needed. I also got a used pond filter for our pond and an unusual Van Briggle vase. One of the most interesting things is a encased penny from Diamond Jim Morans restaurant in New Orleans. He was one of the wise guys from there wasn't he? Even though I didn't find that box of Floridian $1 chips I keep looking for I still had fun and got a LOT of exercise. I look forward to doing it again next year.
