Sometimes I wonder if ivory turners really knew ..

... what they were doing or were simply haphasardly trying to push out a product w/o giving it too much thought. Whenever I see such a chip as the two you show (which are beauties, BTW) having two sets of concentric circles, I often wonder why in the world were they placed in the same position (location) on both sides weakening the total structure susceptible to fracturs/cracks within those recesses; especially when deep, where there isn't all that much material remaining between both recesses back to back. I've found lots of fractures/cracks in those areas thru the years and I would imagine they cracked during play and not a natural occurence. The sad part is that those cracks can so easilly be filled in with pigment undetectible by those unfamiliar with ivories... and eventually they can crack even further while the filler becomes dislodged.
