Re: Suggestions for Storage???
In Response To: Suggestions for Storage??? ()

Even though we're on the chipboard, posts here are definitely NOT limited to chip info vbg ! So....a bit of dice information... grin

Absolutely do NOT, I repeat do NOT store the dice in cases with the foam in 'em! There's a chemical reaction between the dice and the foam that will leave an imprint on the dice that's textured like the foam. (disclaimer: it's entirely possible that there's more than one chemical formula to make the foam stuff, and it's possible that not all of it is harmful to dice...but why take the chance? We've seen too many dice marred by the foam sad ).

You need to make sure that your dice are "healthy". Visually, they should be square; the sides should not be "imploding" (starting to cave in), the spots should all be flush with the surface of the dice. If the sides are starting to implode, or the spots are not flush, the dice are starting to self-destruct and need to be quarantined. If not quarantined, other dice that are near them could be affected by the (fumes? vapors? whatever) that are emitted from the self-destructing dice...and you could get a chain reaction. (Dice can 'shrink' so much that the spots will pop out! We had a box of assorted dice that were missing spots, and assorted spots that were missing dice, but I can't show you because I can't find 'em...might have finally pitched em).

You need to smell your dice. If they smell kinda' like vinegar...Quarentine them! Again, they're starting to self-destruct and could affect other dice around them. If you aren't sure, put the pair in a small plastic box for 2-3 days then open and smell...you'll know immediately if they have the vinegar syndrome! sad

If they're crystallizing badly (which yours don't appear to be) the late Jeff "the diceman" Laudeman recommended a light coat of clear nail laquer. Coat one side at a time and let each side dry before doing another side. Be especially careful around any logos, applying the laquer in short "dabbing" strokes as opposed to long strokes...don't want the logo to smear. This will strengthen the dice enough so they can be gently handled (dice can be so badly crystallized that they actually crumble when you pick them up! sad ). Don't try this on imploding or vinegar-y dice...all you will have is sticky imploding stinky dice (I had to experiment grin ). I've had pretty good luck with this method, but the logo on the single Monte Carlo, pictured below, didn't do so well.

We have our dice stored in compartmentalized cases, like you see at flea markets...I think they're called Riker cases (or something like that). I really don't think that's the best way to do it, simply because if a pair starts to deteriorate, it could be awhile before we open the case and discover it...risking damage to the rest of the dice in the case. Unfortunately I simply haven't found a better way, at this point. I just try to go through and sniff every now and then...

Imploding dice

Cryatallizing dice

Storage boxes (note: there are some matchbooks shown in one of the boxes; after that picture was taken I figured out that probably wasn't the best idea...since the matches give off chemical fumes...and the matchbooks have been relocated)
