I've been able to do that on my scanner. By separating them far enough the Epson software will treat them as individual images. I end up scropping and separating them anyway to make sure the scan is good. Problem with this is that you often want to scan like colors, because you might want to do minor adjustments on the color (contrast, brightness, etc) depending on the chip and the scanner.
