This one is my very very favorite!
Why? Well, because we've had this glass swizzle stick for a few years...Unfortunately, it really wouldn't cooperate with the scanner , but it says
SEE BOULDER DAM AT
AL'S BAR
111 SO. FIRST ST. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA
We never knew if it had gambling...but thanks to the matchbook, we now know it had slot machines! YAAAAAAAAAAYYY!!!
And to make it even more cool....
We found this old photo on awhile ago.
With a magnifying glass, you can see the Ace Bar in the background. Here's a better look...
Now is where the phone books come in... It just so happens that the Ace Bar was located at 111 South First Street! Cool, huh?
I don't know when it opened, but in 1939 it was Al's Bar. I don't know when it closed, but it apparently closed before our 1944 phone book was issued...as there was no listing.
Our 1945 phone book lists the Ace Bar, and they were able to keep the phone number from Al's Bar, 804. The Ace Bar was still listed in 1951, but it was no longer listed in our 1952 phone book. We have a LV City Directory from 1953; there's nothing listed at 111 South First Street.
To those who are still reading...thanks for being interested in the old stuff!
If one of the TGT authors is reading...any chance of getting Al's listed in the next issue...c.1939? (Is there going to be a next issue?)
uhhhh...sorry about the huge scans . I use imageshack to upload images and I always had the resize tool thingy make the pictures the right size. The 'resize' box somehow got unchecked...
I checked it again...but too late for the Al's/Ace Bar group of scans.
