Good question, Ralph... but saying "everyone else" isn't factual.
The Loxahatchee Post Office is a Rural PO that was opened in the late-1800s... and is one of the very few locations in western Palm Beach County (with Zip Code) that has their own Postmaster... Even the larger offices in the area that have been around for many years less do not have a Postmaster or their own Zip Code, but follow a Zip Code of neighboring towns and cities.
Anyway, when I first applied for my "box" some 20 year ago... I was told there was a waiting list and I was asked if I wished to be placed on it.
Loxahatchee is the gateway to the Glades area in Palm Beach County where farming/ranching is what most families were involved with; especially when I applied for my "box," and I was under the impression I had a bit of a wait.
I received a call from Joanne, at 33470, informing me that a "drawer" was available if I was interested in it. When I asked what a "drawer" was when I visited the post office that afternooon, I was told it was the larger units that were floorlevel. Though it cost a few dollars more at the time (about $20 for the whole year)... but much less than a "box" at the West Palm Beach Post Office which was some 15 miles southeast, I took the "drawer."
Since, they changed the lobby area and replaced a lot of the hardware, but the numbers remained the same... and I stuck with the term "drawer" because I like it.
