Always hold the chip up to a light/lamp to examine for fracturers in the ring(s); usually on the outer ring(s), where they are positioned at the same distance from the edge on both sides. What you have in this case is a weak area on the chip since material has been removed (grooved) and reducing the thickness.
Simply hold the chip wiggling it to try and catch light pasing thru should there be a hairline fracture.
This can easilly been found if the chip has not been tampered with (filling in the fracture).
