Eggs were 79c a dozen, and for some reason didn't have salmonella, (probably did but we were not food neurotics back then) they are only 99c now. Milk, cottage cheese and butter was delivered to our homes. (and the milk had cream in it and came in a glass bottle!) That's more notable than the prices. Butcher shops had sawdust and blood on the floors. We had mass outbreaks of rubella, chicken pox and polio.
On the other hand, tires went flat if you ran over something. An economy car got 12 miles per gallon. Refrigerators were not frost free. Cars didn't have seat belts or air bags and if you had one that ran 100,000 miles it was "really old" and exceptional. HiFi was new, and many people had party line phones, not something they could carry in their pocket or purse.
In 50 years, the turn of the century, the 2000's will be the "good old days".
We're doing just fine.
