I would never eat while handling someone else's discards (chips, merchandise, used books). I'm not necessarily a clean freak, but it's just common sense - if you wouldn't eat food from a stranger's hand or off the floor, why would you eat with something that has been in one of those places? That's another reason why cleaning chips makes sense, something we have discussed before as a matter of casino pride and aesthetics.
