I knew I would sacrifice some quality by going with an all-in-one rather than a separate stand alone units. I am willing to make 'some' concessions, but "mediocre?" I didn't get that impression from the HP or the Epson. The hot colors it seems to work well with as I knew from other scanners I had the pink and 'hot colors' do not work well so I purposely took a couple of pink and fluorescent color chips for that reason, also I took a couple of my most colorful notes and a couple of pictures to test both for scanning and printing ability. Both the Epsom and the HP did superb, as far as I could see.
I did read somewhere (I can't find it just now) that it is a 48 bit scanner. I will double check that.
I hunted all over for costs on printing... you were more successful than me. I only found some 'general' comments from users' feedbacks. Epson offers high volume ink cartridges online only at a savings (I think) over the standard size.
I checked the availability and the HP is readily available, the Epson model 800 I can only find (locally) at Best Buy and they say they stay sold out and back ordered. That is the current status right now. I called other stores and found availability, but they too say they are the fastest selling of all of them. Which make me think, someone else likes them also.
