Dred Scott Decision
In Response To: This date in history ()

About All I remember from American History when I was in School Was that The Dred Scott decision said that a slave could not claim freedom because he was taken into a free state. I've also seen the building in St. Louis where the decision was made.

After reading the ditty in the Day in History above It almost Makes sense. Seeing how the current Supreme Court decisions Are mostly Paper thin Maybe they only said that since Dred Scott was not an American Citizen he couldn't sue in Federal Court. Now the resoning could be that since the slave was not born in this country and had not been naturalized he was not a citizen and therefore had no right to sue. That sorta kinda makes sense without injecting racial Prejudice. a little like an Illegal (AHEM UNDOCUMENTED) Alien (AHEM WORKER)

OR

Because the slave was property he couldn't sue. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense without racial prejudice.
