"Substitutes for money" has generally been the accepted definition included in the term "numismatics" ... other than coins. Chips definitely fall into that category.
According to my on-line dictionary I found the following;
Main Entry: nu·mis·mat·ics
Pronunciation: \-tiks\
Function: noun plural but singular in construction
Date: circa 1828
: the study or collection of coins, tokens, and paper money and sometimes related objects (as medals)
— nu·mis·ma·tist \nü-ˈmiz-mə-tist, nyü-\ noun
