The USA Printed 1.7 billion in notes in 1 year the majority were $1~5 notes @ 6¢ per note (you do the math) is a HUGE amount of money. The USA has re-designed all the denominations except the $1, they want to phase it out and replace it with hard currency (a coin) because it last longer (30 years I think is the life expectancy) most other countries have made the 1 denomination a coin. Americans do not like $1 coins, the Susan B Anthony, Sacagawea, and the Gold Presidential dollars have flopped horribly. The $1 note may possibly go to polymer.
Australia and other countries use polymer (plastic film) and their notes cost more to print but they last 10 years in circulation.
