I was told by an antique shop owner in French Lick that the hotel was careful to stay removed from the actual gambling. He said, in the early part of the 1900s there were dozens of bars, clubs and small hotels south of the hotel that had gaming. They were mostly back room casinos. Often just showing your room key from the French Lick Hotel would get you in.
