You just lift the token up to insert or remove the bills and then snap it back down to hold the money. The wire construction looks a little wimpy so if you had a big wad of cash it might not work so well. Perhaps you were just too flush.... It doesn't look worn at all so I would guess it didn't work too well for who ever got it originally.
