If the payer was a friend of mine and/or a guy with a well-known good reputation, I'd change the date. If $250 was a routine amount for transactions for you, I'd change it. In the one chance in a million that there is ever a problem, you can say you received it with the changed date -- who will know or care? I'd mail the stuff out with delivery confirmation.
