You said, Arguements aren't settled with your fists anymore, now its a gun. - but I watched a few old western movies, didn't they always settle it with 10 paces and a quick draw shootout? That seems like the start of the gun violence, and not because of video games and movies like people blame it on today.
If you look at it like a math equation, bottom line is you can't get shot if there is no gun around, so the less total guns in circulation, the less total shots being fired and less people getting hurt or killed. That may be where the law is going with tighter gun laws. My buddy's cousin was killed acidentally by a friend's gun and became another statistic. There are too many people with that same story.
It is very obvious that jail time and punishment does not prevent crime because we see how many jails there are and they are overcrowded and most criminals get arrested more than once which also shows they weren't scared of the punishment. If someone is going to rob someone else and/or commit a crime, they are not afraid of the victim having a gun. Simple as that.
